Mary Jane Doerr has been a freelance writer for the Petoskey News-Review since 1979 as well as newspapers throughout Michigan and the US. She authored the Bay View chapter for the Little Traverse Historical Society publication, Historic Glimpses and is a member of the society's board. She has been a guest speaker at the Public Library's Carnegie Library Series, the Emmet County Genealogical Society, the Women's Club of Northern Michigan, PEO, Pan-Hellenic of Northern Michigan and the Bay View Woman's Council.
Besides these Petoskey area appearances, she has been featured at the Great Lakes History Conference at Grand Valley State University, the state convention of the Federation of Women's Clubs - Michigan, Questors, the Lansing Women's Club (Michigan's oldest women's club), the Michigan Women's Studies Association, the Clark Retirement Home Speaker's Series and numerous Elderhostels.
A member of the Bay View Association, Ms. Doerr owns a cottage in the historic district. Her mother, Jane Park Doerr, spearheaded the Bay View National Historic Landmark movement.
Ms. Doerr holds a Master's Degree in Education from Wayne State University and a Bachelor of Science degree from Michigan State University. She is a retired special education teacher and was an ESL (English Second Language) tutor for Oakland Community College.
Mary is also a Level II Alpine Ski Instructor who teaches at Pine Knob Ski and Snowboard School, Blizzard Ski and Snowboard School, and at Boyne Highlands Ski Resort.
